Done-For-You Christmas Lights

Amazing Christmas Light Display with Radio Music Syncing

Overview

Where did this idea come from? Why is there a need?

It seems like everyone is getting into the competitive spirit of Christmas lights, with whole streets joining in and making a massive effort to outdo each other.

But what about those people who don’t have the time or energy to make their house look amazing? That’s where Done-For-You Christmas Lights (DFYCL) comes in.

  • packing up the display (from 27 Dec to mid Jan)
  • storing your lights and decorations for you

  • Costs extra closer to Xmas and right after Xmas – pay less, wait longer

The Marketplace

What is the environment the business would be operating in?

Customers

Who would this business be selling to?

  • Busy people, who don’t have the time and energy to decorate their homes (or workplaces?) for Christmas, but who want to look good during the Christmas period and compete with their neighbours.
  • People with money but not time.
  • People for who appearances and status are important (inner city suburbs? wealthy suburbs?)

Competitors

What other businesses or sources would this business be competing with?

  • People who already do this for themselves – set up, take down and storage
  • Christmas decoration stores (could partner with them)

Research

What was found when doing research on this idea? (stats, market size, general information)

In our suburb alone, there are 5 or 6 “precincts” – groups of houses on a street that are going all out with their Christmas decorations, but there are houses next door, nearby or in the midst that do nothing.

Marketing

How would this business reach its customers? Ideas for websites, emails, content, marketing materials.

  • Letterbox drops to the houses around such precincts
  • Ads on YouTube videos about Xmas light displays

What do we need to be aware of when considering the likely outcomes of the business?

Strengths & Opportunities

What are the internal strengths and external opportunities of this idea?

Strengths (things that the business can control)

Opportunities (things that the business can’t control)

  • Growing market and interest in impressive Xmas displays
  • Could offer to store displays for existing Xmas displays (separate service)
  • Could offer each service individually – design, set-up, take-down, storage
  • There are many, MANY houses not yet doing much for Xmas – reasonably large untapped market
  • Peer pressure works to your advantage – if every keeps getting more and more impressive, people will want to compete / keep up
  • Could expand business to other celebrations e.g. Easter, Halloween
  • Could also target the corporate market

Weaknesses & Threats

What are the internal weaknesses and external threats for this idea?

Weaknesses (things that the business can control)

  • Extremely seasonal business model
  • Risk of overload during busy season
  • Would require huge amounts of storage space for 9 months of the year

Threats (things that the business can’t control)

  • People may not be willing to pay enough for such a service,
  • Geographically limited (could be good or bad)
